まず初めに、例文から見ていきましょう。

I have to get rid of a lot of stuff. The apartment I’m moving into is much smaller than the apartment I’m living in now.
物をたくさん処分しなきゃ。今度引っ越すアパートは、今の部屋よりもずっと小さいんだ。

上の例文を読んで、get rid of は 「捨てる」という意味の throw away や throw out と同じ意味だと思う方がいるかもしれません。ですが、答えはノーです。

throw away/out は、ゴミやがらくたを捨てる場合に用いる表現です。一方、get rid of は、「捨てる」と言うよりも、不要な物を人に譲ったり、売ったり、他の物と取り替えるなど、様々な方法でそれらを「手放す」ことを意味します。当然、結果的にそうしたやり方でゴミとして処分する場合にも使用は可能ですので、その意味で、throw away/out よりも get rid of の方が使用の範囲が広い表現だと言えます。
